Steven Lingham

Originally from the North of England, I relocated to Texas, USA to be with my wife and fellow artist, Julie Asher. Together, we paint from our shared creative space, Studio 714.

Art has been a lifelong pursuit for me. I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember, and in 1995, I took the leap to begin selling my work professionally—something I’ve been dedicated to ever since.

Birds are a constant and passionate theme in my work. From delicate passerines to powerful raptors, game birds to vibrant tropical species, avian subjects dominate my portfolio. Since moving to the United States, my exposure to new landscapes and bird species has only deepened this passion. While I look forward to exploring these American subjects in future pieces, I remain committed to painting the familiar and beloved native birds of Europe for my collectors overseas.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked with a range of media including acrylics, gouache, and pencil. In recent years, I’ve found my true voice in oil painting, which allows for a richness of color and texture that brings my subjects to life.

My work is known for its meticulous attention to detail. While my process is often labor-intensive, I strive to capture not just the physical likeness of my subjects, but also the light, atmosphere, and movement that give them life.

Notable Achievements

The Famous Grouse Whisky

The Famous Grouse Whisky project

I was recently commissioned to paint a portrait for the latest 'The Famous Grouse' scotch whisky blend.

The Famous Grouse is a household name and is available worldwide, although this particular product is currently only available in Europe.

The latest blend using Speyside malts has a sherry finish due to it being matured in Spanish oak casks seasoned with sherry.

For this project the iconic grouse design was to feature a female Cantabrian Capercaillie, a subspecies of the Western Capercaillie of the grouse family found in Spain.

I feel greatly honoured to be invited to produce this artwork, and I look forward to seeing it in the stores.

RSPB Calendars

In 2019, 2020 & 2021, I was commissioned to provide images for the RSPB Slimline Calendar.

I spent many hours as a child drawing the birds featured on the front covers of the RSPB magazines, and to be invited by the organisation was a true honour.

King Henry- Peafowl painting

Birds In Art

In 2010 my painting 'King Henry' was accepted into the prestigious Birds In Art exhibition, arguably the world's highest regarded bird art exhibition.

Situated in Wisconsin, USA, The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum has been organising and hosing the exhibition annually since 1976.

I attended the exhibition in person and was delighted to meet many of the greats including Carl Brenders and Robert Bateman.
